Pleasure angler? Hit the Road (or possibly The Moat)…

Rum Bridge Back Lake
Specimen carp fishing holidays

The recent hot spell has seen the re-emergence of the fair-weather ‘holiday’ angler. And Gawd bless every seasonally-affected one of ‘em.

This is, after all, the great joy of fishing: it’s whatever you want it to be; whether you’re a year-round big fish hunter – braving the elements in pursuit of your next PB – or an occasional dangler, content to target whatever comes along when the sun shines brightest.

All of course are welcome here. But if you fall into the latter category – the general ‘pleasure fisher’- please take note: the Back Lake is most definitely NOT the right choice for you.

Indeed, unless you are a highly experienced big carp angler – with either a formidable work ethic, or unlimited reserves of patience – you should instead consider targeting the Road Lake which, though similarly intimate (and equally weedy), is home to 90+ carp (weighing up to 30lbs, but averaging double figures).

Or indeed The Moat, which is heavily stocked with tench averaging 5lbs, roach and rudd, crucians and smaller carp (mostly singles with a scattering of doubles).

The Back Lake, by contrast, is not for the faint-hearted. The 20-odd oversized occupants of this small, extremely weedy venue – several of which are in excess of 40 years old – have seen it all before; and many of our regular repeat guests, competent anglers all, have yet to catch.

So please don’t book expecting to ‘bag up’; because chances are: you won’t. Rather, if you do decide to book the Back Lake, the best advice is simply to enjoy ‘being there’; to savour the peace and relative solitude of the Suffolk countryside, far from the day ticket crowds.

And consider bagging a big ‘un (quite possibly, a new PB) … a bonus.
